This week our Church celebrates the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity.
Every time we make the sign of the cross we reaffirm our belief in a God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Although some people have difficulties with the gender-specific language of ‘Father’ and ‘Son’ and look for other ways to express this reality, all Christian people profess a belief in the one God who is experienced in three distinct ways. We are baptised ‘in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit’ and we remind ourselves of this reality when we pray and when we bless ourselves or others.
Jesus’ experience of an intimate loving God continued in the experience of the early Christians who glimpsed that while the historical Jesus of Nazareth was no longer with them, Jesus as the Risen Christ was a powerful presence, still alive in their midst, and they experienced this as a powerful Spirit of love, courage, gratitude and peace, even in the midst of hostility and suffering. They knew with the certainty of experience God as Father, as Son and Spirit. How this could be so, remained mystery, as it still is, but the experience of love has its own certainty, as Paul writes with conviction: ‘the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.’ For this certainty, he will travel thousands of miles to share his experience, and ultimately will give his life.

God, thank you for sending the Holy Spirit to us!
Thank you, Holy Spirit, for being my Helper.
I need you to help me understand the Bible and to love people like Jesus did.
I open up my heart to you and invite you to fill me up.
Help me to pray what you pray, to sing what you sing and to do what you do.
I want to follow your lead.
Put your joy deep in my heart and let it bubble out in my family and with my friends.
I love you, Holy Spirit!
Bump It Up Walls
As part of our school commitment to improve learning outcomes for our children, our staff are adopting different strategies which reflect a system wide approach from The Clarity Suite by Lyn Sharratt. One such approach is the ‘Bump It Up Wall’. This strategy invites children to reflect on their learning task and identify explicit ways that they can seek improvement and increase their understanding to a deeper level. This will often be reflected in them obtaining a higher grade for their assessment. Below is an example of a ‘Bump It Up Wall’ in our Yr 5/6 Room. When a child is able to observe what is required to advance their level of work it makes the process more achievable and explicit feedback can guide them in seeking this improvement.
Three School Behaviour Concepts
On Monday morning we reminded our Yr 3 – Yr 6 children of the following school expectations:
- Friendly Words
- Gentle Actions
- Active Listening
These core elements are explicitly taught in our classrooms based on the program ‘What’s The Buzz’. We invite families to continually reinforce these principles with their children at home. When these social and emotional competencies are understood and utilised in our interactions with others, the quality of our relationships improve. This continues to be a core focus in our work with our children at Our Lady of the River School.
Semester One Reports
Our staff are working diligently on preparing your child’s Semester One Report. We envisage that these will be distributed to our community on Tuesday 5th July.
Transition Program
Our Bright Start children will commence their connections with their Foundation classmates and Mrs Rayner over the coming month. Whilst they have enjoyed their time with Miss DiGregorio on a Tuesday over the last two terms, we look forward to them feeling connected to our Foundation Class in readiness for full time school in Term Three! We admire their enthusiasm and courage in undertaking this next transition period in their educational journey.

OLOR Students doing us Proud!
Hi all,
It has been another big few weeks in school sport! The Riverland SAPSASA Netball Carnival was held at the Loxton Precinct on Friday, 13th May. The girls played some fantastic netball to make it all the way through to grand final against a strong St Albert’s team. Congratulations to Elysia Cresp, Mackenzie Pitt, Layla Vallelonga and Kenzie Sweet who were selected to try out for the team to participate in Adelaide later this term. Elysia Cresp was also announced as the player of the carnival, a fantastic achievement! Finally, I would like to thank ex-scholars Tatam Hunt and Miley Mitchell for their coaching efforts on the day.
The Riverland SAPSASA Cross Country Carnival was held at Loxton on Wednesday, 25th May in what were trying conditions. The rain started almost as soon as the first runners left the starting line to make their way around the scenic riverfront track. I was very proud of all students’ efforts throughout the day as they persevered to cross the finish line. A special mention must go to Charlie Kregar and Bode Gates who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in the 10-year-old boys race.
Well done to Wavely Marsden who was part of the undefeated Riverland District Football Team that won the Division 2 championships in Adelaide last week. Wavely featured in the best players on several occasions for his efforts in the ruck, and even made his way onto the goalkickers list. Overall, it was a great carnival, and the boys got along well and supported each other.
Congratulations to Charlize Camilleri-Turner, Wavely Marsden, Layla Vallelonga and Annasia Dale for being selected to compete at the Hockey State Carnival in Week 9 of Term 2. These students will test some of their skills against some of the best players around the state. We wish them the best of luck!
Please keep checking for SAPSASA dates on the calendar below.
Have a great weekend!
Kind regards,
Tom Charlton

Instrumental/singing Lessons at OLOR
Would your child like to learn a musical instrument at school?
Music Alive School of Music has been partnering with OLOR to provide guitar lessons at school and is now able to offer students the opportunity to learn piano, strings (violin, viola and cello) and singing at school.
Piano, strings and singing lessons will be provided by Catherine Heuzenroeder, an OLOR parent and experienced teacher who is the accompanist for the Riverland Primary Schools’ Music Festival and regular contributor to the Young Riverland Musical Society (YRMS) program.
Learning an instrument develops musicality and is recognised as stimulating brain function, including maths and language skills. It brings a host of transferable skills including improving memory, concentration and building determination and resilience. It’s also a lot of fun!
Students who learn a musical instrument through Music Alive have the opportunity to perform at recitals, sit nationally-recognised exams and enjoy the social benefits of playing in ensembles.
If you would like more information or want to register for lessons starting soon, please contact Music Alive School of Music on info@musicalive.com.au or by phoning 8584 5561. Catherine can be contacted directly at catherineheuzenroeder@outlook.com or by phoning 0417 530 070.
