Called to Uphold our Catholic Social Teachings.

Catholic Social Teachings

The Catholic Social Teaching principles help us nurture just societies in which the rights of all people are considered and cared for. They stem from a deep-seated Catholic tradition and evolved as the Church has encountered significant social issues. As their title suggests, they are teachings that inspire us to live our Call to Community. Below are seven of the principles that guide us to building a better world for all and based on foundational Catholic beliefs.

  • Dignity - Each person is SACRED, made in God’s image, equal in dignity.
  • Solidarity - Each person is SOCIAL, called to participate in family and community.
  • The common good - All people have RIGHTS and RESPONSIBILITIES. The right to life and its necessities, the responsibility to respect the rights of others and work for the common good.
  • The option for the poor - We care for people who are POOR and vulnerable, before all else.
  • Subsidiarity - All people have the right to participate in decisions that affect their lives. Decisions should be made by the people closest and most affected by an issue.
  • Creation and Environment - The earth and all life on it are part of God’s creation. We are called to respect this gift.
  • The dignity of work and participation – All working conditions must be fair and respect the dignity and the rights of all workers.

God of Justice,

Guide us in our call to create a world that You desire:
where all people are protected, and none go hungry or poor;
where the resources of creation are shared, and everyone can enjoy them;

where all cultures live in harmony and mutual respect;
where peace is built with justice and justice is guided by love.
Give us the inspiration and courage to build a better world for all.

We ask this in the name of Jesus,

Amen
