Year 2 and 3 Class Mass
On Thursday, we reflected on how we could be more like Jesus in how he lived through his call to Community. The Year 2/3 students were most reverent as they presented their readings and prayers. We were reminded that each of us has a special quality that can help build a community that cares for each other, challenges, and helps each other thrive. We are called to share these qualities, to be signs of God’s love and forgiveness in our actions and words.
Fr Emil sang a song in Swahili as he danced with some students. He explained how this is a song that children sing in Tanzania. He explained that when the children sing the song and dance together, they are chanting the ideals, we are one, we jump as one, we dance as one. If one of us is hurting, we all go to help.
You are the gathering one
who calls us into Community
with each other
to love and work,
to support and heal.
You are the gathering one
who calls us into Community
with all people;
to bring justice and hope,
freedom and truth.
You are the gathering one
who calls us into Community
with the whole creation;
to live in harmony,
to teach by our example,
to cherish and renew.
Compassionate and loving God,
Grant us the gift of an extraordinary love
that flows from the heart
to live in Community as you have called us to.

This term has been flying by very quickly with lots of things to celebrate. Students have been finalising their work and teachers are wrapping up the learning programs as we head into report time. Our Wakakirri and Choir students have been working on their acts for these exciting events coming up early in Term 3, and many students have been taking part in SAPSASA events, both in the Riverland, as well as representing the Riverland in Adelaide. We are proud of all of the different experiences we offer to students at OLOR and know that by providing a well-rounded experience we are helping all students be more engaged, enjoy their opportunities and catering to their individual differences.
Teachers have been busy preparing end of semester reports for all students, which will go out at the end of next week. While these reports use an A-E reporting structure, it is important to remember that all students have a different starting point and finishing point, and what is most important is the individual progress that each child has made. We also need to remember that these grades are different to when we attended school, and a ‘C’ grade means that the student is achieving what is expected at their year level. This is a cause for celebration.
I also remind parents to look at their child’s Attitude & Effort for each subject, and the comment, as these give a better indication of how each child is going and what more they can do to reach their individual potential. I know reports time can be stressful for some students and families, but it is just a snapshot of what a child has achieved and who they are. We should celebrate every aspect of their lives and be proud of who they are becoming as they grow up in many different ways.
I thank the teachers for their effort with reports this year as we have moved to a new system to create them and a new way of working through the process. This has taken considerable effort and extra time and patience from the teachers as we navigate and work through the changes. Their efforts with managing the change has been a credit to their professionalism.

The year one class has had a super busy term full of learning and fun. In Math, we have been learning about plane shapes and solid objects. We loved using our bodies to work together to make shapes and using our iPads to capture where we see shapes in the school yard.
In Science, we have been learning about different materials and how they can change. Our favourite activity was when we used actions of bending, rolling, stretching and twisting to make our own characters out of playdough.
In week 5, we welcomed Miss Westley, a student teacher. She has been teaching us about length, how to write a procedure text and all about different digital technologies. We have loved having her in our class!
We look forward to our excursion with the year 2 students in week 10. We are going to the Loxton Historical Village to learn more about what life was like in the past. In History this term we focused on how families, games and transport were different in the past. It will be great to see all the things we have been learning about and to participate in many olden times activities while we are at the Village.

SAPSASA Soccer
OLOR competed in the Riverland SAPSASA Soccer Carnival on Friday 16th of June in Renmark. Both our Boys and Girls teams competed well throughout the day. The Girls team won the day outright with Berri Primary as their game resulted in a drawn result. The Boys team were undefeated throughout the day without a goal scored against them. The Boys team missed out on the final by 1 point, however they should be proud of their efforts. Charlize Camilleri-Turner and Harley Martin were named as Best Team Player for girls and boys for the whole tournament. Students who are interested in trying out for the Riverland squad have been given notes and wish students all the best who try out for those teams. Thanks to Gemma Stewart and Kayla Tsorotiotis for coaching and managing the girls. Thanks to Pat Perre for managing the boys team with Mr Canavan.
Riverland Hockey
It has been a tough week for Harley Martin, Charlize Camilleri-Turner and Ocea Vallelonga as they competed in the SAPSASA Hockey at West Beach, Adelaide. The girls' team has been competing well with wins in 4 of their games and one draw with the final day underway. We look forward to hearing more about the competition when the students return next week. The students have been braving some very wintery conditions outside with strong winds, rain and cold temperatures throughout their carnival.

Recycling Challenge
The Recycling Challenge is over for another year. We have had some amazing entries this year which will be collected by the council next week. These entries will be on display and judged during the holidays – more information to come about when and where.
